Understand what you are preserving
Patina is the colored surface intentionally developed on bronze; it is not simply dirt to be scrubbed away. Outdoor patinas may also evolve as sunlight, moisture, pollution and irrigation affect the metal. Before cleaning, decide whether the goal is to maintain the installed appearance or allow a natural, even weathering process.
Keep the foundry’s finish record and installation photographs. They make it easier to distinguish normal change from localized problems later.
Use a gentle maintenance cycle
Begin with cool clean water and a soft natural-bristle brush or microfiber cloth. Work from top to bottom and rinse away loosened dust. For ordinary grime, a very small amount of pH-neutral soap may be appropriate, followed by a thorough rinse and complete drying.
Never use metal polish, abrasive pads, pressure washing, bleach or acidic household cleaners unless a qualified conservator specifies them. These can strip wax, brighten high points and permanently alter patina.

Wax, drainage and warning signs
A compatible microcrystalline wax helps shed water and enriches color. Application timing depends on climate and exposure; inspect the surface rather than following a rigid calendar. Keep sprinklers from repeatedly wetting one side and remove leaf litter from low areas where moisture can sit.
Seek professional advice for powdery pale-green spots, active streaking, flaking coatings, cracks or movement at anchors. Structural and chemical problems are best addressed early.
